ESTATE PLANNING

Got a legal question about what happens to everything you’ve worked for?

I’m Pat, and estate planning is one of those areas where plain language matters more than almost anywhere else in the law.

Pat Smith Law provides affordable wills, trusts, and estate planning for individuals and families in Thornton and across the Denver metro area, with flat fees and a free fifteen minute consultation.

Most people don’t put off estate planning because they don’t care what happens to their family. They put it off because it feels like homework with no due date, full of language that nobody ever bothers to explain to them. I try to do it differently. We sit down together and talk through what actually matters to you: who you want to take care of things, who should be in charge if you can’t be, and what you’d want to happen if things went sideways. Once I understand that, we build the documents around it, rather than handing you a stack of forms and hoping you can make sense of them on your own.

That usually means a will, and sometimes a trust, though not as often as people assume. It almost always means powers of attorney for your finances and your health, so the people you trust can actually step in and help if you need them to. Whatever fits your situation is what we build, and I’ll explain it in the same plain language I’d use if we were just talking in your living room, because that is really how I think about this work.

A simple estate plan usually means five documents: a will, and four others that work alongside it to cover your finances, your healthcare, and your wishes if you can’t speak for yourself. Assuming your situation is straightforward, that’s something we can usually get done within a week, start to finish. There’s real peace of mind in having it actually finished, not just started.

I’ve been doing this a long time, and I’ve seen how much of a difference a clear, well thought out plan can make for a family when things get hard. I’ve also seen what happens when a plan is vague or unfinished, and it’s not something I want for anyone I work with. That’s really the whole reason I do this the way I do.

Fees are flat and agreed to upfront, so you always know what this is going to cost before we begin. Whether you’re starting from nothing or it’s just been a while since your plan was updated, give me a call and let’s talk through what actually makes sense for you.
